While NC has a coastal climate in the east and a mountain climate in the west, it is still considered a transition zone state. A transition zone is an area where the summers are too hot for cool-season grasses to thrive and the winters are too cold for the warm-season grasses to maintain winter growth and quality. This is especially the case for the Piedmont Region of NC. For this reason grass selection is important to fit the microclimate specific to the site you are interested for turfgrass. In many cases marginal adaptation may be sufficient to warrant using one grass species or cultivar over another.
